CATL and Stellantis, Battery Powerhouse in Spain, electric vehicle
Get ready for a battery boom in Spain! Chinese battery behemoth CATL and auto giant Stellantis are teaming up to build a massive battery factory in Zaragoza. This electric vehicle (EV) powerhouse is set to start rolling out lithium iron phosphate batteries by the end of 2026.
The duo’s €4.1 billion investment is a major win for Spain, a country blessed with abundant solar, wind, and hydropower. The plan? A carbon-neutral factory that’s powered by nature itself. Talk about a green dream!
This partnership is a natural progression of the November 2023 deal where CATL and Stellantis joined forces to electrify Europe’s roads. CATL’s European footprint is already strong, with factories in Germany and Hungary.
The timing couldn’t be better. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s recent meeting with CATL Chairman Robin Zeng seems to have sealed the deal. With Germany as the EU’s car manufacturing kingpin, Spain’s second-place position is a prime location for EV production.
European automakers are feeling the heat from their Chinese rivals. The EU’s ambitious green transition, which includes a ban on combustion engines by 2035, is driving the need for more EVs. To level the playing field, the EU and the US are imposing tariffs on Chinese EVs. This move is encouraging Chinese manufacturers to set up shop in Europe, creating jobs and boosting local economies.
CATL and other Chinese battery makers have a significant lead in battery technology. Unfortunately, Europe’s rising star, Northvolt, recently filed for bankruptcy, leaving a void in the market.
