Remember the zippy little Smart cars that were perfect for squeezing into tight city parking spots? Well, Smart is back with a brand new electric vehicle, the #3, and it’s ready to take on the world (or at least, the suburbs). I recently got behind the wheel for a test drive, and let me tell you, this little car packs a punch!
Standing Out from the Crowd
Revving Up the City Streets, At first glance, the #3 might remind you of its older sibling, the #1. But look a little closer and you’ll see some key differences. The #3 is longer and sleeker, with a sloping rear that gives it a more stylish edge. It also joins the popular ranks of SUVs and crossovers, putting it right in the thick of things with competitors like the Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen ID.3.
A Blend of Brains and Brawn (from Different Brands)
Here’s where things get interesting. While Smart still partners with Mercedes for production, the #3 runs on drivetrains from Geely, the company behind Volvo and Polestar. This means you get that reassuring Mercedes build quality – think solid doors and a sleek, futuristic interior – but with a dash of Geely innovation under the hood.
There are four main versions of the #3, each offering different battery sizes and range. The base Pro is perfect for city commutes, while the Pro+ and Premium offer more juice for longer trips. But if you crave some serious power, there’s the dual-motor BRABUS version, taking you from 0 to 60 mph in a jaw-dropping 3.7 seconds!
Big on Space, Big on Features
Despite its compact design, the #3 offers surprising interior space. Even tall folks in the back seat will have plenty of head and legroom, thanks in part to the panoramic sunroof that adds to the feeling of airiness. Plus, everyone gets their own air vents and USB ports for ultimate comfort.
Speaking of comfort, the #3 is loaded with tech features. All versions come with a digital instrument cluster and a large infotainment screen. The Premium version even throws in a head-up display, so you can keep your eyes on the road. However, there’s a catch – most climate controls are hidden within the infotainment system, which can take some getting used to.

One of the biggest surprises for me was the #3’s driving dynamics. The steering is precise, handling is dependable, and even on twisty A-roads, the car corners flat and stable. Plus, the adaptive cruise control makes highway driving a breeze.

Plus, all models offer fast charging capabilities, making longer trips a breeze (as long as you factor in charging stops).
The Verdict: A Stylish Ride for the City (and Beyond)

While its range might not be the absolute best, it makes up for it in design and overall driving experience.
